This course provides an opportunity to present a basic engineering subject and to develope their analytical and problem-solving abilities. Emphasis is placed on fundamental concepts and on how to analyze mechanical and structural systems.The topics include the analysis and design of structural members subjected to axial loads, torsion, and bending, as well as such fundamental concepts as stre-ss, strain, elastic behavior, and strain energy. Other topics of general intere-st are the transformation of stress and strain and deflections of beams. Also, in this course, the facts, theories and methodologies described in "Mecha-nics of materials" are presented with numerous illustrative examples and ample discussions, so that students can readily master the subject matter.
