Smart City/u-City Planner

• Place Making : To develop new places that are based on advanced urban architectural theories and iCT technology.
• Hybrid Architecture : To implement a hybrid form of architecture combining new media and space.
• Design Computing : To explore digital design methods based on parametric design, generative design, and BIM.

Smart City/u-City Infrastructure Engineer

This track focuses on developing specialists who can understand and apply a diverse and complex range of ubiquitous sensor techniques. The track covers theories about ubiquitous community-based facilities (e.g., u-bridges, u-buildings, u-airports, u-ports, and u-power plants,) that can guarantee flexibility, usability, functionality, and safety. In addition, various related technologies are explored, including those for the planning, designing, construction, and maintenance of advanced Smart Cities and the “smart structure” system technology that can ensure the safety of social infrastructure facilities. This track also explores new and practical applications of various technologies to Smart City/u-City planning and development.

Smart City/u-City Construction Manager

Smart City/u-City is composed of infrastructure and buildings of involving in planning, design, bidding, and construction management. The Smart City/u-City Construction Manager program focuses on the management of costs, schedules, quality, safety, materials, equipment, labor, and risks from the planning to the maintenance stage related to Smart City/u-City . In addition, students develop advanced construction and management skills in engineering technology, ICT, business, economics, and automation technology through integrated curricula.

Smart City/u-City Green Facility Engineer

This track covers relevant theories and exercises for the design, construction, and maintenance of green facilities in Smart Cities. Based on the fundamental principles of the building environment (i.e., heat, light, sound, and air quality), students learn energy modeling and building analysis and acquire detailed knowledge of building performance and evaluation, facility evaluation, smart control systems, optimal control technology, and ubiquitous sensor technology, among others.

2. Facilities & Resources and Funding

Strengthening the Training Program for M.A. and Ph.D. Professionals

The education system and environment for students in the masters and doctoral level training courses are competitive in comparison with other universities, both domestic and foreign. This is the main reason why SKKU (Sungkyunkwan University) has decided upon a basic direction characterized by the focus on research. In addition, there are many institutional and administrative aspects required to be complementary to leading global universities. The SKKU Department of Convergence Engineering for Future City is introducing various improved systems and processes, and is committing its domestic graduate school to the improvement of education through opening the progress of education and research to the masters and doctoral level courses in other universities. A highly educated workforce is in demand and preparation to meet the challenges of society is to be fostered by the following programs for students.

Domestic and International Conferences

The Department of Smart City/u-City Design and Construction has a plan to attract international conferences on ubiquitous technology and to actively aparticipate in international exchanges. The department will hold a consortium with companies, symposiums and international conferences to improve domestic ubiquitous technology. The overall plan is to be a gateway for the acceptance of advanced technology.

International Joint Research

We have had various experiences generating information and interest in the study of key industries in reference to ubiquitous engineering technology, and we are establishing academic ties with renowned research institutes in the United States and Japan. Particularly, we have created international dialogues to vitalize construction and information technology (IT) by participating in workshops and symposiums. In the future, we will promote an SKKU International Joint Research Project based on our experience.

Strengthening Industry-University Cooperation

This program will organize an industry-university Smart City/u-City committee to activate education, study, research and a personnel exchange program. The committee is composed of teams for efficient management (see diagram below), which will secure specialized talent and activate interactions between industry and university.

Industry University Job Fair

The Industry-University Smart City/u-City Committee will make an industry-university job fair. Institutions for recruiting and interviewing will participate in this job fair, in collaboration with graduation and presentation. Through this process, institutions will recruit qualified graduates who will have employment opportunities for their potential company.

1. Reputation

The Department of Convergence Engineering for Future City was established for the convergence of various disciplines(architecture, architecture engineering, civil engineering, and IT) and supported by the Master’s and Doctorate Support program of MLTM(The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, Korea).

For 5 years, the Department of Convergence Engineering for Future City has topped the final evaluation in master’s and doctorate support program.

2. International Engagement

The Department of Convergence Engineering for Future City has successfully executed the conference, workshop and MOU(Memorandum of Understanding) with several universities.
The Department of Convergence Engineering for Future City and TUM(Technical University of Munich), in furtherance of their mutual interests in teaching and research, and as a contribution to increased international co-operation between them, agree to implement, within the framework of the regulations applying in each of the institutions and subject to the availability of resources, the following programmes and activities.

• Exchange of existing staff
• Joint research activities
• Participation in seminars and academic meetings
• Exchange of publications, academic materials and other information
• Exchange of students on a reciprocal basis with tuition waiver
• Joint quality assurance benchmarking.

In order to create a high-quality research environment, the Department of Convergence Engineering for Future City possesses separate spaces (U-Space Platform, Smart City Lab) and cutting-edge equipment (Smart Board, 3D printer, 3D Cutter and 3D Laser Scanner).

• Full-time graduate:
  • 1st semester: 100% scholarship (tuition fee)
  • 2nd semester: 40%~60% scholarship (tuition fee)
  • Extra Labor Cost – Must participate in research or project
  • Travel costs and entry fee – Must participate in conference
