- SKKU, First Entry to Global Top 100 University
- This year, 29 Korean universities ranked in the list of ‘2019 THE World University Rankings’ and there are a total of five schools in the top 200 universities in the world: Seoul National University, Sungkyunkwan University, KAIST, POSTECH, and Korea University. Sungkyunkwan University, which can be called the "best star" in this ranking, showed an impressive rise of 29 steps from last year. Sungkyunkwan University not only joined the top 100 in the global rankings for the first time, but also placed 2nd in Korea. Last year, SKKU was ranked third overall after KAIST, but it has overtaken KAIST and became the top private university in Korea. Sungkyunkwan University has achieved a remarkable development this year followed by the huge rise of 26 steps last year. "Sungkyunkwan University has been focusing to create synergy effect through mutual growth of education and research by supporting the convergence research for the early connected society since several years ago and introducing world-class education system by recruiting famous scholars as professors” said Sung Jin SONG, director of the Planning and Coordination Division at Sungkyunkwan University. “We will continue to invest and support to become a world-class university in the future.” In fact, Sungkyunkwan University creates synergies by inviting top-level researchers and providing an environment where they can focus on research. The results of international SCI papers have increased dramatically from 2,782 in 2010 to 4841 in 2016, making it a top 100 in the world. The amount of research funding also rose from 201.9 billion won in 2010 to 350.1 billion won in 2017. In particular, last year, the index of international papers cited by professor was 2.26, which is the highest in Korea as well as in the world.

- Skkrypto Won the Grand Prize at the 2018 Gyeonggi Block Chain Hackerton Competition
- Skkrypto, which was selected as a best club by the WE-UP Center, won the grand prize at the 2018 Gyeonggi Block Chain Hackerton Competition. This competition was held on Aug 29th at Gyeonggi Economic Innovation Center in order to find out and demonstrate ideas for block chain start-up and solving social issues. 80 people (25 teams) including students, employees, and pre-founders who were interested in the block chain field participated in the event and 6 teams won the prize. Skkrypto had been preparing the "2018 Gyeonggi Block Chain Hackerton Competition" over the summer vacation and won the grand prize for developing a system that can easily handle complaints at buses based on block chains. Skkrypto is a society composed of a variety of people who are interested in the block chain technology and would like to study more in the field. The group aims to lowering the barriers throughout the society for entering block chains. Even though Skkrypto started its full-scale activities in this March, it has been showing continuous achievement such as receiving an silver prize in the "IoT & Blockchain security Hacker Tone" hosted by KISA, Samsung Electronics, and SKT held in June 2018. Prof. Sung Ho HWANG (Dept. of Mechanical Engineering) who is a chair of the WE-UP center said, "I was very surprised at the students' passion and commitment to the block chain technology. I hope they can continuously build their career related this field even after graduation.”

- Discovery of a NoveMaterial to Obtain Highly Efficient Upconversion Luminescence at a Single-band Wavelength
- Lanthanide trivalent ions (Ln3+) embedded in an inorganic host solid are capable of “upconversion”, which is the fascinating ability to convert multiple low-energy photons into a higher-energy photon. Upconversion luminescence suggests the promise of Ln3+-doped materials in emerging novel applications, such as energy harvesting for solar cells or deep tissue optogenetics. However, it has been difficult to further improve the upconversion efficiency because the upconversion efficiency and the upconversion emission spectrum are determined by the complex interaction between the host material and the lanthanide ion at an atomic level. Prof. Dong Hwan KIM, a professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering of SKKU, has developed the novel host material that does not have a short-range order (1st coordination order) by liquefying and quenching the host material using a laser, to maximize the host interactions, thus, realizing highly efficient upconversion luminescence at a single-band wavelength. The results of this study are significant not only in scientific fields but also in real world applications because the intrinsic limitations of the conventional host materials are overcome. This new material will be used in macroscale laser technologies and photonic integrated circuit devices. Please find out more details about this research from the published article: B. S. Moon, H. E. Kim and D. H. Kim, "Ultrafast Single-band Upconversion Luminescence in a Liquid-quenched Amorphous Matrix," Advanced Materials, 30, 1800008 (2018). (featured on the front cover)

- Prof. Duk Joon KIM and his research team was Selected for 2018 Future Materials Discovery Project
- The research team led by Prof. Duk joon KIM (School of Chemical Enigneering/Polymer Science and Engineering) was selected for 2018 new research group for National Research Foundation’s Future Materials Discovery Project. The research theme is “Hyper Ion Transfer Channel Based Superionic Conductive Flexible Material.” The research team with SKKU professors Pil Jin YOO, Gi-Ra LEE and Jp Seok PARK has organized a research group with Seoul National University, Korea University, Yonsei University, and POSTECH and will receive a total of KRW10.2 billion in research grants over the next six years. LG Chemical, L&F Co., Ltd. and Kolon Industries will participate as partners. The goal of this project is to develop a superionic conductive solid electrolyte which is safe, flexible, and highly efficient in order to overcome the limitations of existing problems of the low energy density of conventional liquid electrolyte, reactivity with liquid electrolyte and lithium metal electrode, and solubility of polysulfide in liquid electrolyte. In order to realize this, a new concept of hyper ion channel based polymer material will be designed and synthesized and applied to various devices.
