- Smart Textiles [by Thomas Gries, RWTH Aachen University]
- On April 18, 2016, Professor Thomas Gries from RWTH Aachen University for textile machinery, Director of the Institute for Textile delivered his special lecture on; Smart Textiles: A holistic approach from materials to service The main research subject is Smart textiles. Smart textiles [also known as e-textiles or smart textronics] are textiles with dedicated function of electronics embedded in them. Smart textile is considered to be a new niche for products with great potentials on textile. The overarching research question is "How can be ensured through efficient production technologies and service-based usage models marketable concepts for smart textile products.

- Ordered mesoporous CoMOx (M = Al or Zr) mixed oxides for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis
- Ordered mesoporous CoMOx (M = Al or Zr) mixed oxides for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis Professor BAE, Jong Wook, Chemical Engineering, College of Engineering, SKKU A superior structural stability of the ordered mesoporous CoMOx synthesized by using the KIT-6 template was observed under Fischer–Tropsch reaction conditions. The enhanced stability was attributed to a strong interaction of the irreducible metal oxides with the mesoporous Co3O4 by forming Co3O4–ZrO2 (or Co3O4–Al2O3), which resulted in showing a stable activity. http://pubs.rsc.org/en/content/articlelanding/2016/cc/c5cc10124g#!divAbstract

- The Instant a Water Drop Evaporates Has Been Captured
- A research group led by Professor Byung Mook Won from the School of Advanced Materials Science & Engineering, SKKU was successful in capturing a water drop’s evaporation for 0.3 seconds. The head of the group announced on April 4th, “We have initially made a success in watching the process of evaporation of water drop 214fL in volume. The abbreviation in this case ‘fL’ denotes one liter over a quadrillion. The group captured the scene of the process in which a water drop becomes invisible as it is squeezed between micro particles by using an ‘Ultrahigh Speed X-ray Nano Picture Beam Line’ that belongs to Pohang Laboratory. The result from the study shows that the internal pressure of water drop is 0.6, which is lower than that of the air. The speed of the evaporation was one-sixth the speed a normal water drop evaporates. As a result, the hypothesis that the speed of evaporation of a squeezed water drop may be slower than usual has been proved. Prof. Won says, “The evaporation slows down as it becomes harder for the vapor to escape from the water drop on account of the lower internal pressure compared to the surrounding air. This discovery will contribute to the understanding of the formation of clouds and the control of nanoparticles. The research group’s findings have been posted on Scientific Reports in cooperation with Nature.

- University of Edinburgh Visited NSC to Discuss Collaboration in Science and Engineering
- Dr. Stephen Warrington, director of teaching at the College of Science and Engineering of the University of Edinburgh, paid a visit to the Natural Sciences Campus in order to discuss the areas where two prestigious and one of the oldest institutions at each end of global time zone can work together, specifically in the fields of natural sciences and engineering. It was a return visit for the College of Science’s travel to the UoE in September last year when the College proposed a joint internship program and to explore further possibilities of scholastic cooperation. Dean KWON Young-Uk of the College of Science, Dean SONG Sungjin of the College of Engineering, Dean JEON Byeungwoo of the College of Information and Communication Engineering who were glad to be a part of the meeting talked with Dr. Warrington for an hour and a half, and agreed to establish a closer partnership by establishing a memorandum of understanding, student exchange, internship and double degree program. Additionally, they shared the idea that it is crucial part to create bilateral academic engagement which is typically be spurred by exchanging academic and professional profile with one another, and therefore both will make reasonable efforts to create valuable partnership in the forthcoming time. Prior to the meeting with three Deans, Dr. Warrington also had a chance to see two chemistry students who will be joining UoE chemistry laboratory this summer as a visiting undergraduate researcher, telling about what they are expected to prepare for successful experience in Scotland. The UoE summer internship program started being offered to science students as a part of the SCI-WORLD, study and research abroad program initiated by the College of Science, from 2016 summer, and two students are going to engage in research activities at Edinburgh for two months.
