Interview with Professor Kim Han-ki of the Department of New Materials Engineering - "New Run and Photosynthesis… I'm a science painter."
"Quantum mechanics starts with the question of whether light is a wave or a particle. So I drew waves in the middle of the painting and yellow particles in the middle of the wave.
Kim Han-ki, 46, a professor of new materials engineering at Sungkyunkwan University, said this, pointing to a painting stuck in his laboratory at Suwon Campus on the 13th. Professor Kim is a 15-year-old semiconductor engineer who has 300 papers registered in SCI. While focusing on his research without a single sabbatical, he suddenly grabbed a brush in November last year. He also painted about 30 oil paintings in a year.
Professor Kim of "Workaholic" began painting because of the conflict with his adolescent son. Unlike research, children's education did not go as well as their minds. He was also shaken when the child, who was attending the science and gifted institute of the city's education office, said he would quit his studies due to depression. So I just registered in the studio. "I wanted to find comfort in the painting. When I hold the brush, my thoughts disappeared and my mind became calm.”
Like a scientist, he drew only "know-how." Neurons (neurocells) in the brain are connected like spider webs and "the principle of photosynthesis" in the canvas. "There were some painters who painted science, but they were mostly non-publicists, so they were based on inaccurate information. I knew exactly what my major was, and I wanted to express it exactly."
"When I write a scientific paper, I put pictures in between to explain the principles," he said. "I thought I was drawing a picture for the paper to explain the concepts of quantum mechanics and AI to the public."
Professor Kim said, "As I was immersed in art, I no longer leaned on my children and found happiness on my own." His son quit the gifted and started wrestling. "Last month, my son won a bronze medal in the national city and provincial competition during his presidency. Seeing her happy makes me feel like I've found the answer."
"My goal is to draw one point a month consistently," he said. On the 17th, his first exhibition began at the Korean Museum of Art in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. "I want to take the lead in breaking the barriers of science and art. I hope we can move the principles and applications of science to the arts and create rich expressions."
