- Sewing DNA by… ‘Constructing a Novel DNA Sewing Nanoarchitecture’
- Sewing DNA Sewing DNA by… ‘Constructing a Novel DNA Sewing Nanoarchitecture’ Developed by Prof. Um, Soong Ho from Sungkyunkwan University, Published by ‘Scientific Reports’online in Dec. 4th. http://www.nature.com/articles/srep17722 □ With the advent of nanotechnology, a nucleic acid, which is recognized as a genetic code, is now designed and manufactured into several nanoscaled shapes including line, net, box, and even a variety of imoticons. It is furthermore developed into various nanostructures. Interestingly, DNA nanoarchitectures have been exploited for biomedical uses containing an environment-responsive drug delivery system and an oncogene- or diseases-specific probe for in vivo signal monitoring. Two representative methodologies for creating new DNA nanostructures are proposed; First, one long-stranded DNA which is predictably programmed is clipped by small fragment DNAs termed as staple DNAs. Second, small DNA blocks which is similar to a unit cell of a crystal structure are crosslinked by a ligation-enzymatic activity. The former, which is more popular about the DNA nanotechnology, suffers from a lower product yield and unstability. The latter is relatively ignored eventhough it has much merits of both higher productivity and longer thermodynamic stability. This study may offer a higher preference to DNA sewing technology and then present novel DNA nanostructures for live-cell signal captures and amplification. □ Prof. Um’s research team from Sungkyunkwan University has developed a DNA sewing architecture. The research team is now constructing DNA nanotechnology very easily. using this sewing technology. It can synthesize a few nanoscaled architecture very precisely, which can be applied into selectively interacting with its surroundings with respect to its varying sizes.

- SKKU-HUST holds bilateral graduate student workshop
- Workshop for graduate student exchange was held between Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) Chemical Engineering and Huazhong University of Science & Technology (HUST) Chemistry & Chemical Engineering. In order to cultivate graduate students’ cosmopolitan outlook and to promote co-research through the mutual exchange of research results, SKKU BK21+ ‘Creative Convergence Institute for Chemical Engineers project’ (Dean, KIM, DUKJOON) held the with Chemistry & Chemical Engineering of HUST from Nov, 1. 2015 to Nov.4. In this workshop, 4 professors and 11 students in SKKU BK21+ project, along with 10 professors and 47 students in HUST, made presentations, where a number of HUST students also participated. In the SKKU-HUST Bilateral Graduate Student Workshop, graduate students of both universities presented their research results, and discussed it through cross Q&A. Also, Group Discussions were made on Energy and Bio separately, where students were abel to grasp recent research trends and discuss researches in depth. Awards for Excellent Student Presentation was made and SKKU’s Han, Hwaseung (Advisor: PARK, JAE HYUNG) and Im Irang (Advisor: LEE, JUN YEOB), took the honors. Both universities agreed to continue this event, and scheduled to be held in 2016 at SKKU Chemical Engineering hosted by the BK21+ ‘Creative Convergence Institute for Chemical Engineers project.’ HUST is an outstanding Chinese university ranking 10th in China according to ‘US News and World Report. BK21+, in order to establish a base for mutual cooperation, is planning to expand and gradually move forward to a joint international workshop that connects other excellent universities in China and in the region through this event.

- SKKU Prof. Yi, Gi Ra, Develop the highest level of Rechargeable battery electrode technology that combined nanoparticles
- SKKU and Yonsei University research team(Gi ra Yi, Jong Hyeok Park) achieved Ultrahigh Power and Cyclability of LiFePO4 supported by the NRF of Korea Grant funded by the Ministry of Science and KANEKA/SKKU Incubation Center(The Director : Yong Soon Bu) Surface carbon coating to improve the inherent poor electrical conductivity of lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4, LFP) has been considered as most efficient strategy. They also report one of the conventional methods for LFP but exhibiting a specific capacity beyond the theoretical value, ultrahigh rate performance, and excellent long-term cyclability: the specific capacity is 171.9 mAh/g (70 μm-thick electrode with ∼10 mg/cm2 loading mass) at 0.1 C (17 mA/g) and retains 143.7 mAh/g at 10 C (1.7 A/g) and 95.8% of initial capacity at 10 C after 1000 cycles. This conformal carbon coating approach can be a promising strategy for the commercialization of LFP cathode in lithium ion batteries. This study was published in International celebrated journal ‘ Nano Letter’(Citation Index : 13,592)
