Characterizations, classifications, processes, micro structure, and applications of IT(information technology packaging materials are introduced. Specifically, properties of shape memory alloy, magnetic materials, superconductor, semiconductor, optical materials, piezoelectric materials, environmental materials, super hard materials, and amorphous, etc., will be discussed. In addition, variations of property of function-oriented materials with micro structural evolution, various processing techniques, processing variables, and applications are studied.
EAM5601 Photonic Semiconductors and Devices 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 Korean Yes
The class aims to introduce the operating principles and the structure of photonic devices such as laser diodes (LD), light emitting diodes (LED) and photodiodes (PD). The kinds of semiconductors that show high light emitting efficiency and high sensitivity to light are introduced and the basic physical processes for light emission and detection are explained. The heterostructures generally adopted for these photonic devices are introduced and the physical properties the heterostructures show are expalined.

Basic theories and applications of plasmas which are widely used for thin film fabrication and etching will be discussed. Major topics are gases, cross-section, DC plasma, RF plasma, physical vapor deposition, and plasma etching.

For storage of information, magnetic materials like a MRAM, FRAM are used. Physical properties, measurements, classifications, units, processes, and applications of magnetic materials are introduced. Specifically, characteristics of diamagnetism and paramagnetism, ferromahnetism, antiferromagnetism, ferrimagnetism, and soft and hard magnetic materials, etc., will be studied. In addition, magnetic domains, exchange energy, magnetostatic energy, magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy, Bloch wall energy, magnetostrictive energy, hysteresis curve., etc will be understood. Finally, fine particles, thin films, magnetization dynamics, and applications of magnetic materials will be discussed.

Students discuss a wide variety of functionality of materials and the methods to address critical issues and resolve the issue. This activity is carried out by students via short term projects.

The hybrid technology requires interdisciolinary studies based on NT, IT, CT, BT, and ET. In this course, we investigate core materials for electronic device and material properties. In particular, the lecture will focus on physical and chemical properties, synthesis and process for organic and nano materials.

EAM5725 Biomaterials Science 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 English Yes
The objective of this class is to provide an overview of recent contribution of science and engineering in biological systems and medicine with emphasis on materials. In the first part of the class, physical and chemical properties of representative biomolecules, cells, and tissues will be introduced. Discussion on the role of materials in various biomedical engineering, including microarray, biosensing, drug delivery, and tissue engineering, will follow.
EAM5726 Design and Drafting in Engineering 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 - No
This class is aimed to develop material scientists to understand, analyze, and create general mechanical draftings and electrical circuits. Instruction on the basic terminologies, concepts, and fundamentals of both mechanical and electrical draftings, combined with practice will help students to obtain basic knowledge and skills on drawings in engineering.
