ECH2025 Bioprocess Engineering 3 6 Major Bachelor 2-3 Korean Yes
This course aims to enable the students to understand a series of biochemical reactions occuring in the biological system in an engineering context. After attending this course, students should acquire the basic knowledge of biomolecules residing in the cells where all the biochemical reactions are catalyzed. Students will be able to understand the metabolic reactions in the context of redox reactions and biothermodynamics, while differentiating the similarities and/or dissimilarties of various cell systems. Students will understand the process of genetic information flow and celluar protein production by being exposed to the fundamental principles of genetic engineering and experimental methods. Finally students should understand the dynamics of cell growth and the protein quality control network. This will enable the students to understand the roles of microorganisms widely employed in the production of therapeutic proteins and/or biological wastewater treatment. After attending the course, students will acquire the practical skills to design, analyze the biological process and will be able to evaluate process economics of the proposed bioprocess flowsheet.

The basic concepts and connections of biotechnology help undergraduate (students recognize and focus on the main ideas of biological phenomena. We will discuss the molecular level biochemistry, the molecule of cells, the structure and function of cell molecules, metabolic engineering fundamentals, bio-thermodynamics, photosynthesis, genetics, and their applications such as biochip, human genomics, proteomics.

The main techniques associated with the synthesis, purification, and qualitative and quantitative analysis of organic compounds are obtained through experiments. Polymer synthetic reactions including free radical and condensation reactions, are studied. Several novel analytical equipments are used to characterize the properties of organic compounds synthesized.
