EME5172 Advanced Dynamics 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 English Yes
The purpose and aim of this advanced dynamics course is to present fundamental theories to post graduate level students so that they attain a real comprehensive understandings about motions in 3D. An attempt will be made during the entire course to present real problem oriented material that emphasizes the ability to combine fundamental mathematics and theory of dynamics. Contents of the course may include rotational coordinates, system of particles, planar rigid body motions, and 3D rigid body dynamics. Introduction to Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics will be also covered.
EME5173 System Control 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 - No
The course addresses dynamic systems, i.e., systems that evolve with time. Typically these systems have inputs and outputs; it is of interest to understand how the input affects the output. We will analyze the response of these systems to inputs and initial conditions. We will learn how to control systems that ensure desirable properties (e.g., stability, performance) of the interconnection with a given dynamic system. This course also covers state space analysis, optimal control theory, singular value decomposition, frequency response, stability and robustness of multi-input multi-output system. Linear control system design methodologies are studied through case studies based on the control theories.

This course covers foundations for design theory and methodology such as design creativity, design cognition, and designers’ interactions and design for X – manufacture, assembly/disassembly, robustness, environment, etc. - methodologies with theoretical and project-based approaches. The advanced theories on traditional manufacturing technologies such as casting, forming, machining, welding and etc. will also be covered in addition to next generation technologies including micro/bio manufacturing, laser-based manufacturing, 3-dimensional rapid prototyping, and so forth.
EME5175 Nano-micro System 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 English Yes
This course covers fundamentals of micro-nano systems at graduate level. It covers mems technology, solid state physics, nano materials/devices. The optical lithographic technique will also be lectured. The basic electronic structures of materials, optical characteristics, and electrical property measurements will be covered. Finally, application examples in micro-nano systems will be lectured.
EME5301 Advanced Heat Transfer 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 Korean Yes
This course is to provide a chance for graduated students not only to study fundamental theory on some topics, excluded in undergraduate course, but also to get information of recent findings over the following subjects. -2&3 dimensional steady state conduction, transient conduction-Laminar & turbulent boundary layers in forced convection - Natural convection - Boiling and condensation- Radiation of black body & gray body - Solar radiation
EME5303 Advanced Engineering Thermodynamics 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 - No
This course deals with the first and the second laws of thermodynamics, analysis of the power and refrigeration cycles, mixtures, chemical reaction, thermodynamic relations, phase equilibrium and chemical equilibrium, and the fundamentals of the statistical thermodynamics.
EME5304 Advanced Fluid Mechanics 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 Korean Yes
Incompressible and compressible, laminar and turbulent flow of fluids, classical and finite-difference analysis using differential and integral formulation of the continuity, momentum and energy equations. Application to ducts, plates, spheres, blades, pump, turbines, lubrication, shock waves, nozzle, diffusers and other mechanical engineering equipment.
EME5308 Combustion Processes 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 English Yes
This course will cover the fundamentals of combustion systems, and fire and explosion phenomena. Topics covered include thermochemistry, chemical kinetics, laminar flame propagation, detonations, energy and mass transport, and drop combustion.
EME5311 Numarical Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 Korean Yes
Finite-difference numerical solution methods developed and applied to coupled partial differential equations important in multi-dimensional fluid flow and heat transfer problems. Transient and steady state problems. Consideration of physical and numerical constraints. Accurate algorithms for both incompressible and compressible flows. Application to flows involving buoyancy, shockwaves, secondary motions and rotating fluids. Application of Monte Carlo methods to molecular flows.
EME5322 Nanofluidics 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 - No
When a fluid flows in micro- or nano- channels, it bahaves differently from macroscale channels. At microscales, the ratio of surface area to volume increases as size decreases, viscosity effect becomes dominant in the flow and energy dissipation increases. Also the chance to have turbulent flows gets lower due to low Reynolds numbers. At nanoscales the channel size becomes similar to molecules's mean free path and the continuum assumption is not applicable any more. There are some speical fluidic behaviors, such as electrokinetics, that occur only at micro & nanoscales. This class will deal with size-effects on fluid flow behavior at micro & nanoscales and applications of micro- & nano-fluidics.
EME5323 Solid fuel combustion 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-8 - No
Solid fuels such as coal and biomass are important sources of fossil and renewable energy. However, their combustion characteristics are very different from common gas and liquid fuels, which have to be considered during the design of combustion systems or other energy conversion processes. This course is to understand advanced theories of solid fuel combustion and to apply the theories to design and diagnostics of combustion system through comprehensive consideration of the flow, heat transfer and reactions.
EME5330 Advanced Combustion Engineering 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 English Yes
This course is for advanced topics of combustion engineering, incorporating two main themes. The first theme is micro-combustion based power generation and combustion synthesis, which includes topics of 2-D laminar flames, igntion and extinction theory, flame dynamics and instability, microgavity combustion and turbulent combustion. The second theme is solid fuel combustion, which include coal/biomass devolatilization, char conversion reactions, ash behaviors and design of combustion systems.
EME5505 Micro/Nanotribology 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 Korean Yes
Micro/nanotribological studies are needed to develop fundamental understanding of interfacial phenomena on a small scale and to interfacial phenomena in micro/nanostructures used in magnetic storage systems, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and other industrial applications Friction and wear of lightly loaded micro nanocomponents are highly dependent on the surface interactions (few atomic layers). These structures are generally lubricated with molecularly thin films. Micro/nanotribological studies are also valuable in fundamental understanding of interfacial phenomena in microstructures to provide a bridge between science and engineering.
